The Science of Sleep Stages & Cycles
Sleep is not a uniform state of rest. It is a highly structured physiological cycle governed by the circadian pacemaker (Process C) and homeostatic sleep drive (Process S). Clinical polysomnography divides sleep into specific stages, each serving distinct biological functions.
N3 (Deep / Slow Wave)
Characterized by high-amplitude, low-frequency delta waves (0.5-2 Hz). Crucial for physical restoration, immune function, and human growth hormone (HGH) secretion.
REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
Characterized by mixed-frequency EEG (similar to waking), muscle atonia, and rapid saccadic eye movements. Essential for memory consolidation and emotional regulation.
